Digital Camera Zoom- In photo caption, sometimes you want only to get the face of someone to fill your photo frame or you are in the middle of the birthday party and you want to capture the whole happy situation with many people included. For the simplest way, you can move forward to zoom in the face and focus on that to have portrait image. In second situation, you can move backward to get all area and grab as many people as you can in the photograph. Nowadays, you are helped with zoom feature in digital camera to have those works done.

Basically the zoom feature in digital camera consists of two models, optical zoom and digital zoom. The fundamental understanding is that optical zoom works by physically move your camera lens forward or backward but digital zoom works based on the software inside the camera.

To have focus on certain place, you can push the button to move the lens forward and to have wider area captured, move the camera lens backward. The theory to make changes in optical zoom is by changing the camera’s focal length. It is the distance between camera’s focal point and optical center of the camera. Old fashioned camera still using film, the focal point is located in the film itself meanwhile in modern digital camera, it is located in camera’s sensor. This distance always stated in millimeters. Focal length will increase if you focus on small object and it will decrease if you plan to have wider perspective. Focal length always stated in two figures number in millimeters counting, for instance, 35 mm – 105 mm. The 35 mm indicates that the zoom is not being used meanwhile the 105 mm indicates that the zoom fully used.

Digital Zoom Element in Digital Camera

By applying digital zoom feature in your digital camera, you actually are using built-in software in it to define a part of the photograph which you are interested in. Once you have decided the area, the software crops the rest of the photo and enlarges the area you chose to fit the complete photo frame.

The process of maximizing the zoomed area is also known as Extrapolation. The new count of pixels as a result of this extrapolation will be calculated by this software. Usually, the enlarged area in this process is experiencing downgrading quality than the original one taken before.

My personal opinion is to apply your optical zoom rather digital zoom. You can turn off your digital zoom feature and focus on its optical zoom. Another secret is you can shoot your object manually and edit your image using software in your PC. If you are doing this guide you will not sacrifice your photograph quality.
